AI that works in practice — with people and context at the center

I help organizations make Artificial Intelligence usable and valuable: from strategy and selection to implementation, evaluation, monitoring, and building AI literacy. Human-centered, pragmatic, and compliant by design.

Who I am

I’m Irene de Bruin, AI consultant and founder of AISS (Artificial Intelligence Strategies & Support). My background is in Health Sciences: I earned both a BSc and MSc at the University of Twente. Throughout both degrees, I focused on AI technologies and investigated how AI can be evaluated and implemented in an accurate and truly holistic way — especially in healthcare.

What you can expect from me

  • Human- and practice-first: AI should fit your workflows (not the other way around).
  • A strong connector: bridging users, IT, leadership, and vendors.
  • Tailored support: aligned with your goals, culture, systems, and risks.
  • Self-reliance: knowledge transfer so your team can move forward independently.
  • Control & compliance: privacy, security, and transparency built into the process.

Why I do this work

My fascination with AI started during a major tech event in 2018, where I saw how much value AI can add to society. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to help organizations realize that value in a responsible, practical way.

AISS was founded in 2025 and is based in the Netherlands (Haren, Groningen). I work flexibly: on-site or remotely.

My expertise

As an AI Specialist at Martini Hospital (Groningen), I used my AI and healthcare expertise to initiate and deliver AI projects. In many cases, my role was the “linking pin” between healthcare professionals, ICT, AI vendors, and the board — essential for making AI fit the real-world setting and ensuring successful adoption.

HTA-mAIx: holistic decision support

From research and practice, I developed an overarching, multidisciplinary decision support system: Health Technology Assessment for medical AI applications (HTA-mAIx). It helps evaluate AI broadly and carefully (not only “does it work?”, but also: for whom, in what context, under which conditions, and with what risks), while structurally embedding evaluation and monitoring.

What I often support with

  • Selecting and assessing the right AI: what truly needs to be measured and safeguarded?
  • Implementing AI so it is actually used (short and long term).
  • Building and maintaining AI literacy to increase team self-reliance.
  • Supporting developers/vendors: alignment with users and setting, plus holistic evaluation & monitoring.

Who I work with

I work with organizations that want to develop, implement, or scale AI — and need support to align AI with practice while staying in control of outcomes, risks, and compliance.

Examples of organizations

  • Commercial organizations exploring AI and looking for the right approach and prerequisites.
  • Healthcare organizations (from GP practices to hospital groups) selecting, implementing, or evaluating AI.
  • Pharmaceutical companies applying AI in development and evaluation.
  • AI vendors/developers who want their solution to match users and context.

Region & language

Worldwide possible, with a focus on Europe (EU, United Kingdom, and Scandinavia). I work in English and Dutch.
